How To Measure Ring Size

Table of Contents

Whether you’re buying a ring for yourself or a beautiful diamond engagement ring for your loved one, getting the right ring size is crucial. A nice little sparkler that doesn’t fit can spoil your delight or the surprise of the person you’re giving it to.

It’s easy to find the right ring size if you’re buying from a physical store and the person who’ll be wearing it is with you. But what if you’re buying online and you don’t know the ring size of the person it’s intended for?

Knowing how to find ring sizes makes things a lot easier. An ill-fitting ring that falls off and gets lost is every owner’s nightmare.

How to know your ring size? The ideal ring fit is one that easily slides onto your finger and rests snugly at the base of your finger without having to force it over your knuckle.

How To Determine Ring Size at Home?

Measuring your ring size at home may be intimidating since a slight inaccuracy can mean a fit that’s too tight or too loose. Having it resized means having to spend time waiting for it which can be a burden when you’re busy.

If you’re wondering how to measure ring size at home, the good news is you can get the right size by using materials that you may already have lying around.

You can use a ring you already have that fits you as a reference, a string or strip of paper, and a ruler.

Before we proceed with the steps, here are some tips to help you get your ring size measurement right:

  • Measure the size of the finger that will be wearing the ring. Remember that the fingers in your dominant hand are likely bigger than those in your other hand.
  • Measure your finger at the end of the day or when your hands are naturally warmer. Fingers tend to be bigger early in the morning or when they’re cold.
  • When your knuckle is bigger than the base of your finger, get the size of both and pick a size that’s in between.
  • Measure three or more times for greater accuracy.

How To Check Ring Size

As mentioned, you can measure your ring size in two ways: by using a ring you already have that fits well or with a piece of string or paper. Both methods will yield a measurement in millimeters that you can convert to an equivalent ring size with their respective conversion charts.

Using Your Ring as Reference

  1. Use a ruler and measure the ring’s inner diameter. Measure straight across the ring’s middle from end to end using the inner band.
  2. Note the millimeter measurement of the diameter and use the conversion chart below to determine your ring size.

Using a String or Paper

How do you measure your fingers for rings?

  1. Wrap a string or strip of paper around your finger.
  2. Mark the point where both ends meet.
  3. Get the length of the string or paper in millimeters with a ruler.
  4. Finally, use the conversion chart below to pick the ring size closest to your measurement.

Average Ring Sizes for Men and Women

The ring sizes available for women range from size 3 to 9. Most stores sell sizes between 5 and 7.

For men, the available ring sizes are from 6 to 13 with sizes 8 to 9 as the most common ring sizes.

Of course, ring sizes depend largely on a person’s weight. This means that if you’re planning on shedding or gaining weight, you might want to wait until you’re almost at your desired weight so you won’t need to adjust your ring size after.

Why You Need To Get the Right Ring Size

Aside from having a ring that’s uncomfortable to wear, you need to have the right fit because some rings cannot be resized. There are ring designs and materials that cannot be altered due to their composition and structure.

Eternity rings that have a certain number of gemstones that correspond to a ring size cannot be resized. Also, ornate bands that have stones lining the surface or have a complex setting do not have enough space for the jeweler to cut into.

If your ring is made of an unconventional material like tungsten, resin, ceramic, or jade, resizing won’t be possible because these materials aren’t pliable.

Knowing how to find ring sizes with accuracy before making a purchase is even more important when the ring design and material do not allow resizing.

Diamond Color Chart

Color is one of the four important factors that determine the value and quality of a diamond (carat, color, clarity and cut grade). The colors range from D which is colorless, all the way through Z which is a light yellow or brown. The more colorless a diamond is, the more it is rare and expensive.
